Gluten-free products on the rise

This year, World Celiac Day is celebrated on the 18th of May. However, what is celiac disease and why does the day have significance for the confectionery industry? Put simply, celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes sufferers to develop an intolerance to gluten.

Since 2002, World Celiac Disease Day has been celebrated regularly to raise awareness of the disease. With success - because a lot has happened since then. So-called 'free-from products' are now increasingly finding their way onto supermarket shelves.

Meanwhile, sufferers can also benefit from an ever-increasing variety of confectionery and snacks. The selection ranges from gluten-free pastries to gluten-free sugar confectionery and snacks to gluten-free ice cream. So today, despite intolerance, no one has to give up their favorite sweet tooth.
