Happy New Year

New Year - in August? That is because Muslims celebrate the New Year according to the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar began in 623 AD and, unlike the Gregorian calendar, is based on the moon and not the sun. Thus, in 2021, the new year will be rung in from 9th to 10th August.

The New Year, the so-called "Al Hijra", is celebrated in memory of the exodus of the Prophet Mohammed, who emigrated with his followers from Mecca to Medina to carry on his faith there.

Although the Islamic New Year is not an official holiday in the religious sense, special teaching sessions are often held in mosques and sweets are distributed. For us, this is reason enough to celebrate the New Year and give away sweet treats!
