Halloween: The Sweet Side of the Spooky Season

BDSI

In the USA, Halloween has been an almost sacred perennial fixture for many decades. While pumpkins are carved and shaped into scary grimaces in this country, too, the feverish anticipation of little ghosts, witches, and monsters going from door to door shouting "trick or treat" is on the rise. This originally Irish custom is also a truly seasonal highlight when it comes confectionery consumption in the USA.

Recent research undertaken by the National Confectioners Association (NCA) indicates that 93% of Americans are planning to share chocolate and sweets with friends and family this autumn in celebration of Halloween. In the US, the world's largest confectionery market, the NCA estimates that chocolate and sweets retail sales over Halloween will reach about $6 billion.

By comparison, Halloween confectionery sales in Germany are still in their infancy — and yet the German confectionery sector nevertheless features a great and growing abundance of Halloween articles. Fruit gum and sugar confectionery products are particularly popular. But a wide variety of spookily decorated chocolates, such as little chocolate witches and pumpkins, is also to be found, ensuring that scary snacks and horribly tasty nibbles create the right level of spookiness at every Halloween party in this country, too.

Importers will find a broad choice of German confectionery manufacturers in our online Sweets Export Guide. You can also expect more products and confectionery news from the manufacturers three times a year in our Product and Trade Fair Newsletter.
