Today is a special day - with 'Shrove Monday' the highlight of the German carnival season is celebrated nationwide. Especially in the carnival strongholds of the Rhineland, festive Shrove Monday parades are held. In Cologne, for example, more than 12,000 participants take part in parading through the city in costumes and sometimes on floats for more than 5 hours. On their way, they give away bouquets of flowers and throw candy to the crowd of spectators, who are also dressed up.

A total of nearly 300 tons of candy is distributed to carnival-goers during the Cologne Shrove Monday parade alone. Most of these are individually wrapped sweets such as fruit or chewy gums, mini-sized chocolate bars, or popcorn.
